Barbagallo Raceway Long Circuit Sprint Wrap-up

With the halfway point of the 2013 championship rapidly approaching 78 entrants lined up for round 5 of the LF Performance Speed Event Series at Wanneroo. Although the field was missing a number of the championship leaders there was still a tremendous range of vehicles and a pleasing number of first time entrants. Noticeably well represented was Ford – a pair of black R spec GT FG Falcons contrasting nicely with a pair of classic class 3E Mustangs. A clean track and good conditions in the morning saw a number of competitors set personal bests and lap records fall. After lunch relatively few drivers improved their times – you have to look down to twelfth on the sheets before you can find anyone who recorded their fastest time in the afternoon session.

In front was Peter Morley in the OMS CF10. Morley set a super quick 57.0781 before lunch and while it was a few tenths off his best it allowed for a comfortable win and a relaxed day. In second in his ever evolving Nissan 180SX was John Clark. For the first time in a Speed Event Clark pushed the Nissan, now with a fibreglass rear, under the one minute barrier leaving a gap of just over half a second to Ray Ferrari in third. The six points Ferrari gained closes the gap to championship leader Graham Renn down to three.

Highlights among the classes were a new series PB for 4WD A winner Kim Ledger and an impressive 61.8090 second lap in 4WD B from newcomer Simon Richards. The black R32 GTR still uses a stock motor which judging by the horsepower produced by the combination of E85 fuel and a big single turbo conversion may not be long for this world.

Closest finish was in the mid capacity historics with Chris Bothams (Datsun 260Z) sneaking home in front of Ben Nash (Mazda RX2) by one hundredth of a second. It was a good day for the Fords and the Nissans – as aside from John Clark in 1D, Simon Richards in 4WD B and Chris Bothams (Datsun 260Z) in 3D a class win also went to Aaron Mitchell (S14 200SX). Not to be outshone were the Fords – Adam Williams in the FG ute with a new motor fitted after a comprehensive failure at Busselton set a solid 64.7414 lap for the 5C class win and tenth outright. Long time competitor Mark Hallam (1979 Escort) dominated 3C ahead of the Minis and Russel Cooley (XY Falcon) collected the trophy for 3E despite a rocker cover gasket failure.

Rounds 6 & 7 will be held over the June long weekend as the LF Performance Speed Event Series travels to Albany for the paired hill climbs at the Wind Farm and Mt Clarence.

Round 1 of the 2013 LF Performance Speed Event series saw a welcome return to the traditional season opener of a twilight sprint on the short circuit at Barbagallo Raceway. Conditions were ideal for the 65 entrants with Fridays nights rain gone and conditions a lot cooler than the past few weeks.

As expected the open wheelers headed the list with 2011 Champion Graham Renn setting a rapid 48.796 second time on his last lap of the day. Behind him was Ray Ferrari (Speads RM07) who looks to have made good gains with the car over the summer – his time of 49.190 seconds almost a full second quicker than his last time out on the short circuit. In third was Cos Sorgiovanni (Pilbeam MP56) who could only manage a single lap for the day as the mechanical problems that have blighted his run in recent times returned to sour his day.

A good entry for the production clubmen was a highlight. Gary Thorn (Birkin S3) on a new set of Yokohama A050’s headed the class. The open wheelers and some of the clubbies ran all their laps prior due to the tea break (Obviously open wheelers don’t have headlights) and Gary stopped the clock with a 52.6133 so there is obviously something to like about the new rubber.

Unfortunately a big oil down at the end of the pit straight just after the dinner break made setting competitive times difficult – the top ten listing did not change. The first of the entrants to manage a better time was Adam Williams in his turbo charged FG Falcon ute – finishing the day on 55.5862 seconds for a class win.
